Les Mis v Phantom – The Reprise

Posted on

A charity football match took place between the casts of Les Miserable and Phantom of the Opera last Sunday 11th August at Bromley football club. This post comes a little late, but better late than never I say.

The two teams played in support of Melanie Oakley-Dow, head of wigs at Les Mis who is currently battling cancer and an ex crew member, Alex Bremer who’s 2 year old daughter Lizzy recently lost her fight with Neuroblastoma – a rare and aggressive cancer. Proceeds raised from the event went to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

The event was a huge success and in total raised a staggering £18, 635.10. As well as the money raised from ticket sales, on the day they held a raffle and auction. One generous spectator bid £300 on the football used by and signed by both of the teams. Overall, it was a fun and entertaining day.

The line-up included some celebrity players with Tom Fletcher of McFly fame presenting the trophy to the winning side. Tom’s Sister Carrie, who’s currently playing Eponine in Les Miserables performed an emotional rendition of “You are my Sunshine” which she found very difficult to finish but luckily the crowd were able to lend a hand. Knowing that the song used was played at the funeral of Little Lizzy made it even more poignant.

On the team for Les Mis we had Ethan Bradshaw, Dougie Carter, Lee Dillon-Stuart, James Gant, Gareth Gates, Ricky Green,Dayle Hodge, Danny Jones, Paul Jones, Chris Key, Danny Mac, Tam Mutu, Johnny Purchase, Leo Roberts, Niall Sheehy and Bob Taylor. Mario Falcone from ‘The Only Way is Essex’ pulled out at last-minute due to filming commitments.

Phantom had Chris Barlow, Francis Benali, Ben Brown, Dom Cobby, Peter Dukes, Sam Hiller, Michael Kerry, Tim Laurenti, Ralf Little, Nadim Naaman, Ryan O’Gorman, Simon Prockter, Jeremy Secombe, Richard Shelmerdine, Simon Shorten, Charlie Sims and Simon Thomas. Nothing was said about James Atherton from Hollyoaks but I’m sure he wasn’t there.

The commentary and sound effects added a light-hearted comedy element to the match to remind everyone that it was a bit of fun. One of the best bits was when they taunted Gareth Gates with the well know Will Young song ‘Leave Right now’ when he messed up. Those who don’t understand that joke, Gareth came second to Will Young in Pop idol back in 2002.

My favourite player of the day was Les Mis’ very own Tam Mutu who plays Javert in the Musical. If I didn’t know who he was, I probably would have mistaken him for a professional footballer. The full-time score was 1-1 with goals scored by Phantom’s Ryan O’Gorman and Les Mis’ Chris Key. Les Mis then won 5-4 in a penalty shoot out.

Carrie Hope Fletcher

Carrie Hope Fletcher, known for her YouTube video’s recently joined the Les Miserables cast as Eponine. This was a dream come true for the 20-year-old who played young eponine when she was 7 years old. Fans that hadn’t yet seen Carrie at the Queens Theatre had the opportunity to have a sneak peek yesterday at West End Live in Trafalgar Square. Her emotional performance of ‘On My Own’ blew everyone away.

The following video is of the complete Les Mis performance at West End Live filmed by my friend Emma.

Here’s a collection of Photos I took of Carrie and the rest of the cast.

Carrie will continue to make video’s on her YouTube channel ItsWayPastMyBedtime throughout her years long contract in Les Mis.

This weekend saw the return of the annual London event West End Live.  For the ninth year running it has played host to a number of performances by resident musical Theatre shows. Here are a collection of photos I took at Yesterday’s event in Trafalgar square.

Where has the Time Gone?

I can’t believe we are nearly in April already! there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in a day lately. Shame on me for not dedicating more time to blog but in my defence work has been draining so evening blogging has become a challenge. The weather doesn’t help, which means I’ve not been out and about as much as I would have liked. Luckily events that I have planned for April should help me produce a couple of interesting posts. To be honest, I’ve been dreaming this month away in anticipation of my upcoming holiday at the beginning of May. But have now realised I had better get my arse in gear and begin to plan what remaining bits and bobs I need to get before I go.

I know a lot of people take books away with them on holiday but I’m not a big reader so that was out of the question. I gave it some thought and decided to purchase a couple of poetry books instead. That way I don’t have to stick to one long story that I might get bored with in five minutes. I also wanted something to help inspire me while sitting around the pool. I came across the work of E.J. Stevens and instantly knew that the poems in her two books entitled ‘From the Shadows’ and ‘Shadows of Myth and Legend’ would be my cup of tea and I look forward to reading them.

Now apart from watching a lot of ‘Supernatural’, last night I finally got to see the Theatre production of ‘Les Miserables’ and loved it. Although I still can’t decide whether I like the film or the stage show the best. I thought Tam Mutu’s Javert was brilliant and all the singing was amazing which you don’t quite get in the film but they do a great job none the less. There’s always something about being in the thick of the action and in front row I certainly had that. I would definitely recommend this award-winning show to anyone who is into musicals.

Speaking of musicals! I actually watched the film ‘Hair Spray’ for the first time last night ( I know it’s old now) and wished I had caught that in the West End while it was there. I found it highly amusing. First thing I noticed on the cover of the DVD was John Travolta’s name but I was disappointed that they hadn’t put a photo of him on there. I soon realised that he was, but his character was a woman so I hadn’t recognised him. I honestly don’t know why it takes me such a long time to see these things. For those of you unfamiliar with this film, here’s a picture of John Travolta as Edna Turnblad 🙂

First Show of the Year

I kicked off my theatre going 2013 with the new musical ‘Loserville’ which unfortunately ended today as well. It was a show that my niece wanted to see before it closed. And after experiencing it, I’d wished I’d gone to see it before. It was a very lively, feel good show with superb choreography and imaginative set and props. Both myself and Jordan enjoyed it very much and came out buzzing. While I was in the West End I finally booked myself a ticket to see the stage show ‘Les Miserables’ for March but I’m sure I’ll find something else to go and see in the mean time.

Of course, no day out would be complete without a good meal. We randomly ended up in a Thai Style vegetarian buffet restaurant in Soho. It was different and enjoyable and I didn’t have to worry about what I was eating because everything was meat free and free of all animal products.

Well I’ve done exactly what I said I wouldn’t do and made a Pinterest account. As if I wasn’t wasting enough time on various sites I now have that extra worry about finding that perfect picture to add to my boards. So now I’m probably looking a little bit stupid after slating social networking sites on a previous blog post entitled ‘To Pinterest or not to Pinterest’ and considering I now use facebook a lot more since I wrote that blog too.

I only joined late last night but already have an impressive array of pictures of ‘True Blood’, ‘the Vampire Diaries’ and Les Miserables cast members. The best thing is I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing. So if you are even remotely interested you can check out my pinterest page HERE and if any of you are using pinterest please leave a link to your page in the comments below.
