Happy New Year!

Posted on

Happy New YearI start as I mean to go on in 2013 so my first blog post of the year is a creative one. I found the pastels that I hadn’t used for years and decided to put them to good use even if what I display here is a little rushed and scruffy. I’m discovering my creative side all over again and it excites me so from now on I should have some form of artwork to accompany some of my blog posts.

I woke up this morning feeling happy and positive knowing that I already have some fabulous plans for this year. I experienced yet another peaceful new years eve in with the parents watching Graham Norton and the amazing fireworks display on t.v. I surprised myself last night by pouring myself some Baileys and refusing it after 3 sips. If some of you remember rightly, in a previous blog post entitled ‘A Moment in Time’ I stated that I’d be giving up alcohol completely. Those 3 sips of Baileys is the first drop of alcohol that I have had since the end of November and the fact that I didn’t enjoy it confirms that from now on I’ll definitely be sticking to what I said in that blog post.

It’s nearly time to return to normality as I have to go back to work tomorrow. But the break has been relaxing if a little boring at times. It has given me a lot of thinking time and a chance to asses the way I write my blogs and expand my audience (if I can). So wherever you are in the world I wish you a happy and healthy new year and hope that 2013 is good to you all. I’ll leave you with this short quote… Learn from yesterday, Live for today, hope for tomorrow.

2012 to do List – Achieved or Failed

Posted on

Just before the new year set in I created a to do list for 2012. I didn’t want to commit myself to new years resolutions because a lot of the time I don’t stick to them. So here’s the moment I find out whether the list has been a success or not.

1) Be more Creative:

I suppose I’ve been more creative than previous years but still not as much as I would liked to have been. I haven’t painted or sketched anything but I have written a lot and that has made me happy. My biggest creative achievement this year was getting 3 of my dark poems published in issue 37 of ‘Death Head Grin’, a monthly online horror, sci-fi and fantasy fiction poetry and artwork magazine http://www.deathheadgrin.com/12_08/id587.htm

2) Make an effort to visit more places of interest:

I’m not sure exactly what my aim was when I wrote this. I’ve ended up in places of interest but none that I would have planned to visit before hand. I don’t know if that makes sense to you but I know what I’m talking about 🙂 there are still many places of interest I want to visit, some in London itself.

3) Travel more – even if it’s within the UK:

I would say this has been a success with my trip to Spain, Barcelona, Disneyland and my beloved Torquay and Paignton in Devon. I would still very much like to visit Bath and Canterbury.

4) Watch more films:

With my obsession with Amazon I have definitely achieved this one. I have certainly watched many films on DVD but it’s a rare occasion when I go to the cinema which is something I used to love doing. I’ve also watched a lot of series box sets.

5) Try to get to more rock gigs:

Still more successful than previous years with ‘Lost Prophets’ and ‘Evanescence’. I’m sure there’s been a couple of up and coming bands I’ve seen along the way but it’s not something that is important to me now.

6) Concentrate on theatre shows I haven’t seen:

The Only different shows I’ve seen this year is ‘Wicked’, ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ and ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats’ (tour). I’ve even cut down seeing ‘Jersey Boys’ so much now. There’s still so many more shows I’d like to see though and I’ll continue to get to the theatre whenever I can.

Overall Verdict!

I think I’ve done better than expected to be honest making the ‘to do list’ an achievement and I hadn’t intended on following it. It’s been interesting looking back on what I have achieved and it has given me an incentive to do something similar for next year so watch this space 🙂

Something I Stumbled Upon

Posted on

As if I haven’t got enough to distract me from doing something constructive with my evenings. I have just lost an hour of my life trawling through a website a friend recommended. Now I’m usually the last person to discover anything interesting and in this case it is  probably no exception.

http://www.stumbleupon.com provides pages and pages of pictures, info and articles that engages your personal interests. So I registered (it’s free) and started by clicking on 5 genre’s to personalise my stumble… you then of course click on stumble and it searches for a pages that may take your interest which apparently you wouldn’t normally find on the net when searching yourself. So far I like it but will it be just a novelty at first and will I get bored with it? That’s something I’ll find out in time.

So today I stumbled upon an artist’s work that caught my eye. His work is simple yet genius. Everyday objects/materials are transformed with a little bit of wire and brought to life. The art of ‘Bent Objects’  by Terry Border is humorous and creative… I only wish I’d thought of this myself 🙂

Busy in Blogsville

Posted on

I’ve been busy in the land of blogsville since I got back off holiday, mainly to compensate for the two weeks I’ve missed. I’ve posted a couple of reviews in my reviews blog (there’ll be many more to come) and I’ve posted a couple of photo’s in my creative blog. Due to receiving no response from the e-zine that I sent my poem into a few months back; I thought I might as well add that to my creative blog a little later. I’ve also been checking out some blogger’s photography posts on here, many quite impressive. I think the simplest things make the biggest impact.

Whilst on holiday I’ve been inspired to do something different with my life, I’m not too sure what yet but the thought of returning to normality after experiencing some amazing sights and interesting excursions depresses me. I need more stimulation in my life. Maybe I’ll start that free-lance journalism course a little earlier than planned. After all it’s what interests me.

The past couple of days

Posted on

After having had such a good weekend catching up with friends in the lovely town of Guildford I’m starting to feel those pre Monday blues. We enjoyed a bit of retail therapy before a pleasant meal at Jamie’s Italian which I must say didn’t really have a wide choice of vegetarian meals on the menu, neither did it state clearly which dishes were vegetarian. To be honest there wasn’t a wide range of food full stop which I suppose eliminates having to spend ages deciding what to have. I had the Honeycomb Cannelloni done 3 ways using aubergine and sun-dried tomato pumpkin, ricotta and spinach. I enjoyed the variety of taste but I wouldn’t have said it was amazing. For dessert I had the ultimate brownie; made with chocolate, raspberry and amaretto with a side dollop of vanilla ice cream. Apart from getting raspberry seeds stuck in my teeth and feeling a tad sick half way through the soft textured desert I quite enjoyed it although it could have done with just a bit more ice cream which accompanied the brownie really well. The service was to a high standard and the waiters were quite humorous and chatty.

Today I had one of my favourite kind of days…a lazy one to which I spent most of in bed watching heroes and Smallville. I have finally finished season 9 of Smallville, it took me a while but I got there in the end. I’m putting off buying season 10 at the moment because I don’t want it to end, its my favourite show! I’m not entirely sure about carrying on Smallville season 11 in a comic book but I might take a look if I see it. I’ve never really read a comic before but there’s always a first time for everything. I’m starting to get more and more into heroes now and its all starting to link together and make a little more sense. I’m only on episode 8 of season 1 but it seems pretty awesome. I bought the first season of ‘the Walking Dead’ and series 1 and 2 of ‘Being Human’ yesterday so I now have plenty to keep me occupied.

I’ve posted in my new creative blog again today… two posts actually! One is another new poem and the other is a couple of photographs of Guildford castle from yesterday’s trip. Please feel free to pop by there and check them out. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

New Blog

Posted on

So as you know I’ve been working on a bit of poetry recently and I have now made a new blog to accommodate my creative works. My first poem is called ‘The Gathering’ and it can be found here http://sherylscreativecuriosities.wordpress.com/

I would appreciate any feedback and constructive criticism. As its my first displayed poem, I’d like to know if it’s any good but as I said in a previous post it won’t be to everyone’s taste.

I will also begin to display art work once I have some completed pieces. I still need to go shopping for some new materials and equipment so I don’t know how long this could take but I’ll keep you posted. I’m excited by the fact that I can share my creative side with everyone in Blogsville, I just hope people like it.

It’s not very often I get a weekend to myself and since this was the case I managed to do a lot of thinking. I seemed to have abandoned my creative side after the last few hectic years of my life and seeing as things are not slowing down at all I might as well try to fit it in somewhere. It’s always something I have enjoyed doing since I was a small child. I was never any good at maths or anything technical at school… my brain just didn’t work that way; but give me a piece of paper and I would spend hours perfecting a sketch. I can’t sit back and watch my skills go to waste so once I have the materials I am going to begin painting again. I like to work with acrylic on canvas using bold colours in an alternative fashion.

Something else I haven’t tried my hand at since I was… a teenager (crikey! I didn’t think it was that long) is writing poetry and I started this yesterday. One I finished and another is on its way to completion. Again, this isn’t a style that some people would find appealing… I’m very much into my horror/fiction. I have already submitted my completed poem into an e-zine in hope that it will be published there but as its my first poem in such a long time I’m not sure whether it will be any good or not so fingers crossed.

I thought that it may be a good idea to create a separate blog for all things arty farty. But I shall update you about that nearer the time. Anyway I’m off to try and finish this poem which has presented me with writer’s block… toodle-pip!
